LUC supports planning consent for RWE’s 60 MW Alwen Forest Onshore Wind Farm

LUC is delighted to share the news that RWE has recently received planning consent from the Welsh Government for its 60 MW onshore wind farm in the Alwen Forest area of North Wales.

The development comprises nine turbines, each up to 200 metres in height, located across forested land in Conwy and Denbighshire. Once operational, the wind farm will generate enough renewable electricity to power around 70,600 homes each year, making a significant contribution to Wales’ clean energy goals.

LUC has been providing landscape and visual advice to RWE on the Alwen site since 2016. We initially advised on feasibility and siting, and assisted RWE through numerous design iterations to achieve a layout that met the demands of landowners and stakeholders, while reducing consenting risks.

Our team carried out a detailed Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment (LVIA), considering effects on Eryri National Park as well as the local forest landscape. Following submission, the application was examined as a Development of National Significance (DNS). As part of this process, we were also asked to assess potential effects on the proposed Glyndŵr National Park in north-east Wales.

We were pleased to note that, in recommending consent, the Inspector agreed with the evidence presented by LUC’s expert witness.

The consent represents a major milestone in RWE’s plans to expand its renewable energy portfolio across Wales. It follows extensive environmental assessment and stakeholder consultation to ensure that the scheme delivers long-term benefits for both the local community and the environment.
