Safeguarding trees
LUC’s arboricultural team worked closely with The Hill Group project team to ensure the redevelopment of the former Bristol Zoo car park safeguarded the high-quality trees already established on site.

Supervising root excavation
Our consultants provided on-site supervision for trial excavations to determine the most appropriate foundation installation methods. This process helped identify the size and position of roots near the proposed works. Using a vacuum excavation (VAC EX) machine, the team carefully removed soil to expose roots without causing damage. Our arboriculturist then traced each root back to its tree and advised the contractors on practical steps to protect the root systems during the construction works.

Integrating trees into development
We also oversaw all other tree-related construction activities and protection measures, offering tailored, practical guidance, helping to ensure the development could progress smoothly while securing the long-term health of the existing trees.
This work not only reduced the risk of delays on site but also supported wider goals around biodiversity and sustainability, helping to integrate mature trees into the future of this space.
