LUC supports transition from century-old transmission line to modern design
As featured on the BBC, Scotland’s oldest operational transmission line – the PL1 steel tower line between Erskine and Devol Moor – is being dismantled, nearly a century after it was first constructed. Some of the towers date back to the late 1920s.
LUC played a key role in making its replacement possible. We were appointed by SP Energy Networks to identify a new route for a wood pole overhead line, and then led the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Section 37 consent process.

Our EIA team led the routeing, EIA, and consenting work, supported by our in-house landscape and visual, ecology, historic environment, and GIS and Visualisation experts. Together, we helped shape a robust and environmentally responsible solution.
The new line is now in place, and the ageing steel towers are coming down. The design will ensure continued network reliability for the next 40 years and help SP Energy Networks maintain a resilient service all year round.
This marks an important milestone in Scotland’s electricity network – a proud moment as LUC helps power the energy transition towards Clean Power 2030.
